Long Live GoGo
GoGo music is native to Washington D.C. and was considered to be bigger than Hip Hop in the 1980's within the city limits, being a treasure of black culture.
The rapid gentrification pushed a lot of the African American D.C. natives out of the city, and with them, the culture.
In 2019, a new resident in the neighborhood of Shaw, a formerly black neighborhood, complained about the loud GoGo music coming from a popular mobile phone store, forcing them to turn down the music.
Activist took that fight to the streets, with rallies and protests accompanied by GoGo bands. There have been months of impromptu GoGo concerts, shutting major intersections of the US capital, as a peaceful protest to empower black culture in the city. The store was allowed to play GoGo again.
